Romantic Outdoor Activities for Couples

Get out and about with your loved one by trying some of these outdoor activities!

A fun free thing to do with your other half is to explore the Wellington Botanic Garden. Despite sitting in the centre of the city, you’ll be surprised how easy you can find yourselves alone in this 25-hectare (62-acre) garden. The Botanic Garden has a huge network of walking trails to enjoy hand-in-hand connecting to rose gardens, public artworks, the Picnic Cafe, a duck pond, glasshouses with tropical displays and more! If your budget knows no bounds, or you simply want to wow your loved one, take her on the Romantic Helicopter Tour with Wellington Helicopters. This 30-minute tour takes you a heli-excursion over Wellington city with a glass of sparkling wine in hand. Your guide will tell you about Wellington’s history and geology as you fly before landing at a remote location with breathtaking views of the Marlborough Sounds. If it isn’t your honeymoon, then at least it would be the ideal place to pop the question! Discover more about the experience on Viator and Tripadvisor. Because you’re probably feeling like a couple of love birds, join the others in the bird eco-sanctuary of Zealandia. This bird sanctuary is one of the best places to learn about the New Zealand eco-system and provides tons of opportunity to watch beautiful native birds up-close. Learn about New Zealand’s extinct birds in The Exhibition and enjoy a day walking around the sanctuary along the many walking trails. There’s also the option to spot kiwi birds on the Zealandia by Night Tour. Learn more about Zealandia on Viator and Tripadvisor.

Romantic Indoor Activities for Couples

For those days when the weather doesn’t play ball, which happens often in Wellington, here are some activity ideas to make sure the romance doesn’t get washed away with the rain!

If you’re into culinary experiences, but want to try something different to your standard date night dinner, why not try one of the 9 Things to Do in Wellington for Foodies? For example, book a tour at The Wellington Chocolate Factory! Learn how freshly-roasted cacao beans are transformed into sweet treats with a tasting at the end of the tour. Public tours run on Saturdays at 11am and private tours are also available. There’s also a multitude of craft breweries, as well as cocktail bars to indulge in.

Learning something new together is always a fun experience and there’s certainly plenty of opportunity for that across Wellington’s range of museums. The Te Papa Museum is the most popular option, and for good reason, with the national museum holding a vast array of exhibitions which will make you both experts in all things New Zealand once you’re finished. The Wellington Museum is also an excellent choice, especially with “The Attic” exhibition being a place of intrigue, telling stories of the “weird, worrisome and wonderful”. One that’s especially good for a rainy day: challenge your loved one to a game in one of Wellington’s board game cafes. Counter Culture on Victoria Street has more than 600 board games to choose from along with burgers, sandwiches, sweets and sharing plates to munch on. Alternatively, play a more physical indoor game at the bowling alley at Bowlarama in Newton!
